Large Fowl Classes

by Eric Markley

As with all breeds of exhibition poultry, the Ohio Poultry Breeders (Ohio National) would like to encourage you to exhibit your breeds at the Ohio National.

There are 15 classes that all exhibition poultry fit in to. There are 7 bantam classes including the bantam ducks. There are 8 large fowl classes including the large ducks and geese. This page is dedicated to the large fowl breeds. For more complete information you may email Eric Markley or consult the American Poultry Association Standard of Perfection.

The American Class breeds originated in the Americas after the time of the civil war. A few of the breeds in this class are Rhode Island Reds either in single comb or rose comb, Plymouth Rock, or Jersey Giants. Most of these breeds are very docile and good egg layers (usually it will be a brown egg).

Asiatic Class are breeds originated in Asia or more commonly known as China. Some of these breeds are Cochin and Brahma, which are very large birds with lots of feathers including feathers on the feet and legs. All breeds in the Asiatic class will lay brown eggs. They do not lay as many eggs as the breeds in the American Class, but these birds will keep the usual family in eggs.

English Class are breeds originated in and around England. A few of the breeds in this class are Cornish, Orpington, Sussex, and Australorp. These breeds lay brown eggs and are noted for their large heavy bodies.

Mediterranean Class are breeds originated in and around Italy. A few of the breeds are Leghorn, Minorcas, and Spanish. These breeds are noted for the long flowing tail feathers of the mature males and for the white egg production of the females. Most breeds in this class are more flighty and usually do not go broody.

Continental Class are breeds originated in northern Europe and France. Some of the breeds in this class are Hamburg, Polish, and Faverolles. Most of these breeds are for ornamental purposes only.

All Other Standard Breeds covers breeds such as Modern Game, Sumatra, Aseels, Ameraucanas, and Araucanas. These breeds are bred for a variety of reasons, but mostly for ornamental reasons.
